V - VERNISSAGE OF THE EXHIBITION « CONCRETE MIRROR »

On 27 November at 18h, we are delighted to present the opening of the exhibition « Concrete Mirror » an artwork situated between the processes of anthropological and visual art research. From September 2017, Noara Quintana, visual artist, and Alex Ungprateeb Flynn, anthropologist and curator, have been working together with the Brazilian community of Paris on the emergence of a political imaginary at the frontier, exploring how subjectivity and immigration intersect and take form. The exhibition starts from an ethnographic foundation: through a series of workshops, the artists invited members of the Brazilian community to imagine their relationship with Brazil through a particular object, or objects, of their choice. These objects were the starting points for coffees, barbeques, political debates, lunches, concerts, walks - in short the everyday encounters of friends - on how it feels to be Brazilian in Paris, to exist between multiple conceptions of self, to be constructed and yet also embody the other, to reflect on a politics which is at once distant and yet felt in every tangible moment. This method of working anchors the artists’ approach in a generative process of moving through the world and making it in collaboration with others: they offer a speculative intervention, embedded in shared conversations and experiences, towards a collaborative political imaginary.

The exhibition is open from 9am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, from 27 November to 7 December.


Bios

Noara Quintana is a Brazilian visual artist based in São Paulo and Berlin. Through the practice of sculpture, intervention and video, her work seeks to investigate the (de)construction of landscapes and explore the frontier territory between the geometric, the poetic and the political.

Alex Ungprateeb Flynn is an anthropologist at Durham University, UK. His research focuses on aesthetics, politics and subjectivity and he has conducted ethnographic research on these issues in Brazil since 2007. Working with social movements as well as with practitioners from within contemporary art, Alex’s research explores how activist intervention and artistic practice can be understood as relational and transformational processes, prompting the theorisation of fields such as the production of knowledge, the configuration of the ‘Global South’, and the unmaking of utopian horizons.

Le 27 novembre à 18h, au 54 Boulevard Raspail 75006, nous espérons avoir le plaisir de vous compter parmi nos invités au vernissage de l'exposition Concrete Mirror, une œuvre d'art combinant les processus de recherche anthropologique et ceux de l'art visuel. Depuis septembre 2017, Noara Quintana, plasticienne brésilienne, et Alex Ungprateeb Flynn, anthropologue et commissaire d'exposition britannique, travaillent avec la communauté brésilienne de Paris sur l'émergence d'un imaginaire politique des frontières poreux, explorant l’intense croisement de la subjectivité et l'immigration. Le point d’appui de l'exposition est ethnographique: à travers une série de workshops, les artistes ont convié des membres de la communauté brésilienne à imaginer leurs relations avec le Brésil à travers un ou des objets particuliers de leur choix.

Ces objets sont devenus l’origine pour des rencontres autour d’un café, des barbecues, des débats politiques, des déjeuners, des concerts, des promenades – en bref, des rencontres quotidiennes avec des amis. Ils sont issus de moments de concrétisation de la façon d'être brésilien à Paris, d'exister en miroir entre de multiples localisations et conceptions de soi, d’être construit par, mais en même temps, incarner l'autre, de réfléchir sur une politique à la fois lointaine mais qui, à des certains moments critiques, est ressentie dans une très grande proximité. Cette méthode de travail ancre l'approche des artistes dans un processus génératif de déplacement, d’oscillation entre des mondes reliés et de réalisation de soi en étroite coopération avec les Autres: une démarche qui permet ainsi une intervention spéculative, intégrée, dans des conversations et des expériences partagées, et conduit vers un imaginaire politique collaboratif.
