In this discussion, we welcome Alya Sebti, Director of the ifa-Galerie Berlin and Guest Curator of the Dak'Art Biennial 2018 for a dialogue with Jonas Tinius, anthropologist at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Alya and Jonas will speak about the institutionalisation of curatorial, artistic, and anthropological practices. Their conversation will touch in particular on the possibilities and strategies for decolonising these practices. With ‘Gallery Reflections’, the two have already initiated since 2016 a series of encounters at ifa-Galerie Berlin around the question of the decolonisation of artistic institutions, as well as curatorial and anthropological research. In Paris, they are also speaking about the difficulties of the creation of such a space for creation and reflection, liberated from institutionalised constraints, within the space of an institution itself.



Bios


Alya Sebti is Director at ifa-Galerie (Institute of Foreign Cultural Relations), Berlin. She has curated several exhibitions in Europe and North Africa and was the Artistic Director for the 5th edition of the Marrakech Biennial (2014). She has written and lectured extensively on art and the public sphere. In 2018, she will act as a Guest Curator of the Dak’Art Biennial.


Jonas Tinius is an anthropologist of art and postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Anthropological Research on Museums and Heritage (CARMAH), Institute of European Ethnology, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His current research project explores how Berlin-based art institutions engage with notions of otherness and alterity through critical curatorial strategies. He is convenor of the Anthropology and the Arts Network of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (with Prof. Roger Sansi, Barcelona).

Le 5 décembre nous accueillerons Alya Sebti, directrice de l’ifa-Galerie Berlin et commissaire invitée de la biennale Dak’Art 2018, en dialogue avec Jonas Tinius, anthropologue de l’Université Humboldt de Berlin. Alya et Jonas s’entretiendront sur l’institutionnalisation des pratiques curatoriales, artistiques et anthropologiques. Ils aborderont en particulier la mise en place d’outils et d’actions concrètes pour décoloniser ces pratiques. Avec « Gallery Reflections » ils ont en effet initié en 2016 une série de rencontres à l’ifa-Galerie Berlin autour de la question de la décolonisation des institutions artistiques et de la recherche anthropologique et curatoriale. Ils parleront ici des défis de la mise en place d’un tel espace de création et de réflexion, libéré des contraintes institutionnalisées, au sein même d’une institution.    


Bios

Alya Sebti est directrice de l’ifa-Galerie à Berlin (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen). Elle travaille par ailleurs comme commissaire d’exposition indépendante et a été directrice artistique de la 5ème édition de la Biennale de Marrakech (2014). En 2016, elle a enseigné à l’Académie internationale de Salzbourg : On Curating, translating polyphony. Co-rédactrice de la publication Pas de Deux suite au programme de résidence qu'elle a organisé à la Villa Romana (Florence, 2014),  elle a écrit et donné des conférences sur l’art et la sphère publique dans des lieux tels que : la Fondation Hartung / Writen Art Foundation (France, 2016), la Biennale de Thessalonique (Grèce, 2015), l’Université d’Addis-Abeba (Ethiopie, 2015), Le Cube Art Centre (Maroc, 2015), le Kunstquartier Bethanien / Club Transmediale (Allemagne, 2016), l’Akademie der Künste (Allemagne, 2014), Biennale de Liverpool (Royaume-Uni, 2014). Elle fait partie des commissaires invités de la biennale de Dak’Art 2018.

Jonas Tinius est anthropologue de l’art et chercheur postdoctoral au Centre de Recherche Anthropologique sur les Musées et le Patrimoine (CARMAH), Institut d’Ethnologie Européenne à l’Université Humboldt de Berlin. Son projet de recherche actuel explore la façon dont les institutions artistiques basées à Berlin abordent les notions d’altérité à travers leurs stratégies de commissariat d’expositions.
